Sometimes when you see a games art style, you go “WHAT?!” and then realize its so ridiculous that you have to try it out. Drilly Willis is a perfect example of that. 

     If you haven’t figured out by now, I’m a huge fan of platformers and really, really weird games. When I saw this game on the list of games The Indie Game Collective were asked to showcase, I jumped on it like a million bucks. Personally, I saw this game as a throwback to the later seasons of Adventure Time (when it got super weird) but according to a few others I talked to as well as the steam listing for the game, its more like a warped mixture of Metroid, Regular Show and the movie Bill & Ted which makes total sense to me.

     The story behind Drilly Willis is fairly simple, one night a jealous musician named Flash Clappy crashed Drillys concert and banished him to a world of things they hate. This leaves Drilly with the need to escape Flash Clappy’s prison, learning new songs on his guitar that grant him with new super powers. This, mixed with the ability to randomly upgrade the tools attached to his drill head allow Drilly Willis to defeat random monsters and escape the world, finding his way back to music for good. 

     While many of you will look at the artwork and run away from the Steam listing, you’re going to be missing out on one of the best low-budget indie platformers recently released. Drilly Willis leaves you wanting to come back for more every time you play it, and I definitely think I will play it again soon. 

One of the best things to remember when checking out indie games… don’t judge a book by its cover.
